This type of vitreous or glass enamelling is known as “bas taille”, whereby a textured surface is enameled with crushed glass by hand. I drew my inspiration for this piece from two sources: Barbara Hepworth’s sculptural forms and the luscious colours of the rippling sea. This is a one of a kind brooch made by my hand throughout the process, from design through to piercing the sheet of silver, using a textured hammer and curving the metal. The reverse is hallmarked and has a pin.
The process of enamelling involves hand grinding the vitreous enamel powder using a pestle and mortar to refine and wash the glass. Then I carefully lay the grass grains on the silver ensuring even coverage before filing the piece in the kiln. A four different enamel colours were used on this piece to capture the way the sea can change and shift as it moves.easures 2inches at its longest and just over 1 inch at its widest, and can be worn any way.
I post my jewellery in a gift box within a padded envelope and use a tracking service.
